A pneumatic diaphragm pump is a self-priming, pneumatically driven positive displacement pump designed for pumping liquids in industrial applications. Pneumatic pumps are capable of handling highly viscous and aggressive liquids, such as paints and varnishes (dyes, solvents, pigments, etc.), highly viscous substances, aggressive media and chemical components, and products with abrasive elements. This versatility makes them indispensable in the chemical, construction, oil and gas, and food industries.

Diaphragm pump - safe pumping

The pneumatic type of pump is safe, i.e. explosion-proof, as it uses inert gas or compressed air. The diaphragm pump is designed in such a way that there are no exposed parts that rub or rotate, which makes it safe.

What a diaphragm pump (pneumatic) consists of

Each diaphragm pump consists of a ball valve, a valve seat, O-rings, two flexible diaphragms (diaphragms), which are placed in a housing and rigidly connected by a single stem. The working fluid is pumped according to the principle of volumetric displacement, using air supplied by the pneumatic actuator. The volume of air first squeezes out one diaphragm, thereby blocking the flow of liquid. Then it squeezes the other diaphragm, pushing the liquid out on one side and then sucking it in on the other. In a continuous compressed air supply process, the diaphragms and ball valves operate alternately. Pneumatic diaphragm pumps have a fluid flow rate dependence on the supply air pressure. The flow rate also depends directly on the volume of the pump's working chamber.

Advantages of diaphragm pumps

The design of pneumatic diaphragm pumps does not include electric motors, rotating parts, gearboxes, seals and bearings, which makes the diaphragm pump design as simple as possible and the pump itself highly reliable and leak-proof.

It is also worth noting the unique compactness and ease of installation of diaphragm pumps. It is also worth noting that a pneumatic pump can be classified as a fireproof and explosion-proof pump. This is because the working fluid used is a non-flammable inert gas or compressed air. The product flow rate can be adjusted by changing the supply air pressure, thereby affecting the pump performance.

Diaphragm pumps (pneumatic) can be classified according to their application in pumping products, for example, for water-based paints and varnishes, agricultural materials, ceramics, pumps with aluminium casing material and rubber membranes (NBR, EPDM) are used.

When pumping aggressive media (solvent-based paints and varnishes), diaphragms made of: PP (polypropylene), AL (aluminium) and Teflon (PTFE) diaphragms.

Versions of Steiner diaphragm pumps

  • Pump casing: polypropylene (PP), Teflon, PVDF, aluminium, 316 stainless steel;
  • Membranes: Santoprene, Hytre, Viton, PTFE, Geolast;
  • Valve: Santoprene, Viton, PTFE, Geolast, Nitrile, Stainless Steel, EPDM;
  • Valve seat: polypropylene (PP), Teflon, PE UHMW;
  • O-ring: Nitrile, EPDM, Teflon (PTFE), Geolast, Viton.

Advantages of Steiner diaphragm pumps

  • The pump can be operated in all mounting positions;
  • Easy to maintain;
  • Compact, robust design - low operating costs;
  • The pumps are capable of pumping a variety of products: from water to very viscous products with particles;
  • No seals - environmentally safe, guaranteeing no leaks;
  • Can be operated in hazardous areas - compressed air drive, no sparking;
  • It can operate in dry running mode without damage;
  • Self-priming from 8 metres, 5 metres at dry start;
  • Variable capacity - easy to adjust the capacity from zero to maximum by changing the amount of air supplied;
  • The pump stops when the pressure line is closed and starts automatically when it is opened (no temperature rise or wear);
  • Multilayer membranes with a long service life for heavy duty applications. The surface of the membranes is completely smooth, there are no seals or gaskets;
  • The pump does not require lubrication.
