A peristaltic pump is based on the alternating compression and relaxation of a hose or tube, which draws the contents into it. A similar process takes place in our throat and intestines. The rotating shoe or roller moves along the entire hose, completely crushing it and creating complete isolation between the suction and discharge sides. This prevents leakage of the substance. When the hose or tube is restored to its original shape, a vacuum is created, which ensures that the substance is sucked into the pump. The pumped substance does not come into contact with moving parts and is completely isolated in a robust hose designed for heavy loads or in a precision-extruded tube. This pumping action makes the pump suitable for precise dosing and has a rated pressure of up to 16 bar (hose) and 2 bar (tube). The high-pressure hose has an inner coating of 2 to 6 reinforcing layers and an outer layer that enables it to operate at higher pressures and generate higher suction heights than unreinforced tubing.
Features and benefits of peristaltic pumps
Peristaltic pumps excel in pumping tasks, especially with abrasive, aggressive or viscous substances. The absence of valves, glands and seals makes them inexpensive to maintain, as the only part requiring maintenance is the hose or tubing. Peristaltic pumps are also capable of delicately transferring substances, making them ideal for handling shear-sensitive polymers and fragile cell cultures. Finally, only one part of the pump is in contact with the fluid being pumped - the inside of the tube or hose, making it easy to sterilise and clean the inside of the pump.
Sealed construction
Peristaltic pumps have no seals, so they can pump liquids such as aggressive chemicals without leaks and require no routine maintenance.
Low cost of maintenance
The only part of the pump that wears out is the hose or tube, which is relatively cheap and can be easily replaced in no time.
Dry running and self-priming
Peristaltic pumps are not affected by the absence of liquid in the system - running dry is not critical for them, which significantly reduces downtime and repair costs. Restoring the shape of the hose or tube creates a powerful self-priming action and enables the pump to move liquids containing trapped air or prone to the formation of off-gassing gases.
Gentle pumping action
Peristaltic pumps are characterised by a gentle pumping action with a low shear rate, which is ideal for shear-sensitive substances including flocculants and broths.
Pumping liquids with high solids content
Hose pumps can pump slurries containing up to 80% inorganic solids or 15% organic sludge.
Dosing accuracy
The pumps are accurate in dosing, with a reproducibility error of ±1% and a dosing error of ±5%.
